High temperatures of up to 38 degrees Celsius are expected in Budapest as temperatures keep rising.

The National Center for Public Health issued a third-degree heat alert from midnight on Monday until midnight on Thursday.

In addition, some parts of the country are predicting UV-B radiation to reach dangerous levels; authorities are advising the public to stay away from direct sunlight between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. and have called on the population to use sunscreen and use clothing that protects them from UV rays.

With temperatures likely to break records, forecasters from Hungary's weather service hope that a cold front expected later this week will cool things down. "This week will be above normal, 8-10 degrees above normal maximum temperature," said Tamas Csoka from the Hungarian Meteorological Service.

Tips on how to cope with the heatwave:
• Stay hydrated with plenty of water, even if you're not thirsty. Hot weather causes you to sweat, and it is vital to replenish the lost fluids to prevent the body from overheating. Have a water bottle within reach as you go about your day to avoid dehydration.
• Never leave children or pets alone in vehicles, not even for a short while. Keep your pets indoors and make sure they have access to a cool space and plenty of water.
• Stay inside during the hottest part of the day (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and limit time outside in the sun. Avoid strenuous activities and postpone participating in outdoor games and events.
• When you are outdoors, make sure you stay out of direct sunlight as much as possible. Wear a hat or carry an umbrella, also wear sunscreen.

During the heat alert, public pools have been the ideal place for locals and tourists to cool down. "This is my second time in a pool, even yesterday was hot, but today is hotter than yesterday," said Ward Tukoyes, a tourist from Jordan.

The hot weather was welcomed by some visitors who cooled down in one of the city's public fountains.

"I think it's easier with the heat," said Owen Fatisa, who is visiting Budapest from New York City, "you can always stay out of the sun and not go outside, so I prefer the heat."

The city of Budapest is reaching out to its vulnerable populations, the elderly and homeless, to provide assistance; authorities have also published a map online which shows where the city's fountains are.

The authorities are asking the public to take weather advisories seriously, with young children, those who are sick and the elderly being most susceptible to heat-related illnesses, and anyone who is over-exerting themselves.
