England's soccer team has been told to play its next competitive home game behind closed doors, following disturbances at the Euro 2020 final against Italy at Wembley in July.

European football's governing body UEFA has also imposed a penalty of a second match without supporters, although this one is suspended for two years.

The English Football Association has been fined $116,000, UEFA added.

At the match in July, England's first major final since 1966, supporters without tickets forced their way into the ground and there were clashes between supporters and officials.

"Although we are disappointed with the verdict, we acknowledge the outcome of this UEFA decision," the Football Association said.

"We condemn the terrible behavior of the individuals who caused disgraceful scenes in and around Wembley Stadium at the Euro 2020 final, and we deeply regret that some of them were able to enter the stadium."

UEFA's disciplinary panel imposed the fine and two-match ban on supporters "for the lack of order and discipline inside and around the stadium, for the invasion of the field of play, for throwing of objects and for the disturbances during the national anthems."

The FA had already been fined $34,734 after a laser pointer was shone at Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel during England's semi-final victory.

Home Office figures showed 39 soccer-related arrests at the Italy match. Nineteen police officers were injured.
