Former Prime Minister of Poland and President of the European Council for 5 years Donald Tusk said he's returning to Polish domestic politics to fight against the current right-wing government.
He has been elected leader of the centrist Civic Platform (Platforma Obywatelska) party, and said he wants to remove the current government led by the Law and Justice party of Andrzej Duda.
Duda's govenment has clashed with the European Union - of which the European Council is a part - on the independence of judges and the "rule of law." Tusk was in-post when the EU started a legal challenge against Poland for changes to the judiciary.
"Today, evil rules in Poland, and we are ready to fight against this evil," Tusk said on his election.
He first defeated Law and Justice in 2007, when his Civic Platform party beat Jaroslaw and Lech Kaczyński's party and Tusk became Prime Minister of Poland for the first time.
"There is no chance for victory without the Platform," Tusk remarked.
