Emma Raducanu, 18, beat Marketa Vondrousova to progress to the third round of the Wimbledon Championships – and quadrupled her career winnings in one moment. But who is she?

She's currently ranked 338 in the world by the Women's Tennis Association, but seeing as she only finished her high school leaving exams two months ago, and has now won the biggest game of her life so far, Raducanu has caught the attention of the sporting world.

On Thursday, she beat former French Open finalist Vondrousova in straight sets to move further in the famous grass-court competition in London.

Raducanu competes under the UK flag, but her backstory is far more interesting. A glance at her social media profiles gives a glimpse of her true story.

"London|toronto|shenyang|bucharest" is the chosen header on her Twitter page, hinting that she recognizes her family homes as equal to the city in which she grew up.

She was born in Toronto in 2002, to a Romanian father and a Chinese mother. The family moved to London when Emma was just two years old and soon after arriving she picked up a tennis racket and joined Bromley Tennis Academy.

Raducanu showed talent early on and was soon placed on the LTA Pro Scholarship Program, which allowed her to train while continuing her school work.

In May she sat Advanced-Level exams in maths and economics.

She told UK media her focus was on tennis, not her exam results. The choice may come in handy with her latest win earning the teenager $157,989.

"I would say I have high standards of myself. That's helped me get to where I am in terms of tennis and also in terms of school results," she told her post-match press conference.

Raducanu will play Sorana Cirstea of Romania on Saturday in the next round.
