Russia's Defense Ministry said it is "monitoring" NATO naval exercises in the Black Sea, near where a British vessel's presence sparked outrage in Moscow last week.

The RIA news agency reported the ministry would take note of the movement of international ships off the coast of Crimea.

The statement came on the second day of military maneuvers by NATO member navies, called "Exercise Sea Breeze," with 32 nations are taking part in the exercises.

The training is taking place in Ukraine, but the U.S. military is "co-hosting" the event and there is a large U.S. presence in the Black Sea.

According to the U.S. Navy, Sea Breeze is an annual exercise held most years since 1997. The 6th Fleet's USS Ross destroyer is the U.S. vessel taking part.

There will be a total of 5,000 troops, 32 ships, 40 aircraft, and 18 special operation teams involved.

The warning from Moscow comes four days after Russia summoned the UK ambassador and accused the nation of lying over a warship confrontation in the Black Sea.

Russia warned London it would respond firmly to any further "provocation" by the British navy off the coast of Crimea.

Meanwhile in the Mediterranean, Russia was carrying out exercises of its own. The Defense Ministry said five ships and two submarines were involved along with several jets.

Footage released by Moscow showed jet fighters with cameras in their cockpits and sailors taking part in exercises on a ship.

Neither exercise is thought to be linked to the other.
