Spain COVID-19 rules eased for EU - but retained for others

Spain's Health Ministry has made another sudden U-turn on its recent COVID-19 travel restrictions policy for entry to the country.

In a bid to keep pace with its European neighbors this week, they have dropped the need for locator forms and specific health documents, effective immediately for those travelling from the European Union (EU).

But confusion has remained about a lack of clear guidance from the government.

Unlike France and the UK, Spain still requires proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test on entry for anyone outside of the EU.

CGTN Europe spoke to the Vice President of the Spain Confederation of Hotels and Accommodation.

Maria Frontera said hospitality and tourism bodies within the country continue to lobby the government to have parity with other European countries.

''We are used to Spain not being the quickest one in those decisions," Frontera said. "Whatever the reasons, they don't prioritize the same way for the touristic industry, as for all countries.

"I think sometimes there are geopolitical reasons that may interfere with taking those decisions. But we are trying to convince them and prove to them the free mobility."

The government has insisted it will drop all remaining restrictions for those outside the EU within the next two months. This cautious approach is intended to prevent an Autumn spike in infections, as has been seen in the last two years.

Spain's tourism industry has enjoyed a huge resurgence this year. Many regions have reported over 80 percent of pre-pandemic tourism levels, which is considered a huge success.

This sector is still the country´s most important industry, accounting for nearly 12 percent of the country's gross domestic product (GDP).

Frontera said she hoped the latest changes would help further increase the country's appeal.

''Of course, it is important we will see the consequences we hope, in the following weeks," she added. "What is important is we want to take advantage of all the opportunities right now, that we have seen the demand from all those countries to come and visit Spain."

Industry leaders will certainly hope that a full relaxation of restrictions will be in place for the vast majority of countries by the time the popular winter holiday season begins.
