Former United States President Barack Obama paid tribute to outgoing German Chancellor Angela Merkel in a video message.

"I was privileged to draw on your partnership in overcoming a series of crises facing our people, and I was happy to become your friend, as I watched you draw on good humor, wise pragmatism and an unrelenting moral compass in making hard decisions over many years," Obama said.

The former President added, "So many people, girls and boys, men and women, have had a role model who they could look up to through challenging times," he said. "I know because I am one of them.”

"Danke schon," he added.

Friday marked Merkel's 107th EU summit as Germany's chancellor over nearly 16 years, her first coming when Jacques Chirac was still the French president and Tony Blair the British prime minister.

The summit was probably her last, but If German political parties now in talks following last month's election fail to form a ruling coalition by mid-December, Merkel will be back in Brussels for another summit.
