Royal members of the extended family of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, have expressed their sadness following his death on Friday at the age of 99.

A statement from the UK Royal Family revealed the Duke "passed away peacefully" at Windsor Castle, with the news prompting crowds to pay their respects outside Buckingham Palace.

Now the Duke, who was born into the Greek and Danish royal families before marrying Queen Elizabeth, has received further tributes from his wider family.

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark is a cousin of the Duke as they share a common ancestor in Christian IX of Denmark, and the Danish Royal Family led the tributes on social media. 

A post on Instagram, featuring a picture of the Duke wearing the Danish Order of the Elephant, read: "Prince Philip was born in 1921 as Prince of Greece and Denmark and was a great-grandchild of Christian the 9th."

Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou released a statement on Twitter: "Prince Philip was born in Corfu and served his country with devotion for many decades."

Spanish royals King Felipe and Queen Letizia sent a telegram to the Queen, that read: "We shall never forget the moments we shared with him and the legacy of service and dedication to the Crown and the United Kingdom by your side."

Dutch royals King Willem-Alexander, Queen Maxima and Princess Beatrix also paid their respects in a statement posted on Instagram: "Throughout his long life, he committed himself with dedication to the British people and to his many duties and responsibilities."

Sweden's King, Karl Gustaf, said the Duke was a "great friend of our family for many years", while Belgium's King Philippe and Queen Mathilde said they were "saddened" by his passing.

Pope Francis also sent a telegram to the Queen, praising his "distinguished record of public service and commitment to the education and advancement of future generations."
