A new programme helping sufferers of long Covid with opera singing techniques is proving successful.
Created in partnership with the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and the English National Opera (ENO), the pilot programme is helping 12 people with long covid symptoms that range from breathlessness and anxiety, through exercises involving singing, breath work and mindful wellbeing practices.
While the World Health Organisation has not yet figured out why some people who had Covid-19 still experience symptoms, amongst the most commonly reported is a loss of taste and breathlessness, later leading to a rise in anxiety.
But, like many art institutions, the ENO has been out of work due to Covid restrictions and has looked for ways to help the NHS with the demand for their services.
At the beginning of the pandemic, the ENO's costume department was sewing medical scrubs and masks for healthcare workers.
Now the new breathing programme is planning to work with 1,000 patients and build regional partnerships across England.
