London Metropolitan Police arrested eight people after environmental campaigners doused four landmark buildings in the British capital with orange paint in a Halloween protest.

Six were held after paint was sprayed on the interior ministry, the headquarters of the domestic intelligence agency MI5 and a subsidiary of Rupert Murdoch's U.S. media conglomerate News Corp, the Metropolitan Police said.

Officers from the City of London force arrested two others following a similar protest at the Bank of England in the capital's financial district.

The Just Stop Oil group, which wants an end to new North Sea oil and gas exploration, said it was responsible, and posted videos on Twitter.

The activists said the buildings were chosen "to represent the pillars that support and maintain the power of the fossil fuel economy – government, security, finance and media."

News Corp UK and Ireland Limited, the subsidiary of News Corp that was targeted, publishes titles including newspapers The Times, The Sunday Times and The Sun.

Its London HQ, opposite The Shard tower, was targeted by Extinction Rebellion climate change protesters in July.

"We are not prepared to stand by and watch while everything we love is destroyed, while vulnerable people go hungry and fossil fuel companies and the rich profit from our misery," a Just Stop Oil spokesperson said.

"We are acting to stop new oil and gas because it is the right thing to do. As citizens, as parents we have every right under British law to protect ourselves and those we love."

At the weekend, protesters blocked roads in the capital, provoking the reaction from drivers and pedestrians, some of whom were seen remonstrating with them and even trying to pull them away.

Police, however, urged people not to take matters into their own hands.

"I know communities and the public of London have had enough of a very small number of people disrupting them," Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist said in a statement.

"I would urge the public not to directly intervene, but to call us."

Just Stop Oil has over the last month mounted almost daily protests in opposition to the government's plans to license more than 100 new oil and gas projects by 2025.

Action has included smearing chocolate cake on a waxwork figure of King Charles III at the Madame Tussauds museum and throwing tomato soup at Vincent van Gogh's famous Sunflowers artwork at the National Gallery.

The group said 637 protesters had been arrested over the last four weeks and more than 1,900 since April.
