The town of Irpin, west of Kyiv, has been recaptured by Ukrainian troops, according to its mayor.

CGTN cannot confirm the reports but the area has been the scene of heavy fighting as Russian troops try to clear their way to the capital.

As Russian ground forces come under increasing pressure, Ukraine's government is warning of further missile attacks on strategic locations.

The Ukrainian Defense Ministry said "vessels of the Russian Federation's Black Sea fleet are carrying out tasks in designated areas of the Black and Azov sea operational zones, probably in order to carry out missile strikes against facilities in Ukraine."

Moscow said last week it would focus the next phase of its campaign around the Donbas region and rumors of Russian armed forces re-grouping began on Sunday night.  The Ukrainians say they may be gathering in Belarus after suffering significant losses.

The Ukrainians also believe Russia may be planning an advance towards the administrative borders of the two separatist regions of Donetsk and Luhansk in the far east of the country, collectively known as the Donbas. Bordering Russia, they have been partially controlled by Russian-backed separatists for eight years.

The head of the Chechen Republic Ramzan Kadyrov predicted that the city of Mariupol, the last port in the south east to hold out, would soon fall to Russian troops supported by his forces, according to TASS news agency.

With such chaos in his country, and millions of people forced from their homes, Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy,  put forward offers aimed at smoothing peace talks starting in Turkey.

He suggested Ukraine in the future could be a neutral, non-nuclear state -  if Ukraine voters approved in a referendum -  and a third party would need to guarantee Ukraine's security.

He made the comments  in an interview with independent Russian journalists. However in an interview on UK radio, Alexander Rodnyansky, a senior adviser to Zelenskyy,  said his country isn't "willing to give up any territory," adding, "now the pressure is on Russia."

He continued: "Clearly, they cannot sustain this war for years and their morale is so low they can't even keep up their supplies and logistics."

Russia's foreign minister Sergei Lavrov told Serbian media he hoped for results from the talks but was worried that Western nations might intervene to destroy the process.

Earlier, the Ukrainian emergency services shared footage of firefighters fighting a fire in another western city, Lutsk.

It's the second time a fuel depot was hit in an overnight attack. It followed a similar strike in Lviv, when four rockets were fired on Saturday to ignite a fuel storage facility there, which burned all night.

The regional governor says he believed the latest Russian attack in the far west of Ukraine came from a missile fired in Belarus.

Russia also said it had shot down an aircraft evacuating a Ukrainian commander from Mariupol.
