A travel plan that would allow people to go on holiday to countries with a similar level of COVID-19 infection has been set out by the EU – but there is a fear it could be too late for this summer.

The guidelines are part of a strategy to get Europe moving again and open up the travel and tourism sector as many countries are now implementing lockdown easing measures.

The EU is now recommending travel between countries at a similar virus risk, which will be monitored by Europe's health agency, the ECDC. To ensure this, there would be safety measures at border crossings and ports.

For many people looking forward to summer holidays, this does offer hope that they can get away for a break but there is plenty of uncertainty about when this phased approach will be completed.

Experts are suggesting it will be a question of months, not weeks, before it comes in. It means that "staycations" are still the likely option for this summer.
