Is trying too hard to be happy making us miserable? The Agenda talked to Professor Trudie Chalder from King's College London's Institute of Psychiatry who reminded us that it's impossible to experience true happiness unless we've also experienced pain and sadness.

Rather than targeting emotions, we should try to live our lives putting the things that matter first, she said.

Being part of a group might be positive for some individuals, but for others it will have less impact, she added.

Telling someone to adopt a more positive attitude is rarely likely to produce the desired effect, Chalder told The Agenda's Stephen Cole: "You can't stop feeling what you're feeling."
