Music items, including 10 guitars, from a personal collection of former The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr were auctioned for charity at Christie's London on Thursday (September 17), selling for over £3.6 million ($4.8 million), more than three times the total estimates expected.

The "Marr's Guitars: The Johnny Marr Collection" auction, featuring 111 lots, was led by Marr's 1982 Rickenbacker 330 Jetglo that he played for the band's 1984 single "This Charming Man."

It had an estimate of £60,000 to £80,000 ($80,124 to $106,832), but sold at auction to a bidder in the room for £280,000 ($373,912).

Another lead item was Marr's 1960 Cherry Red Gibson ES-355, bought in early 1984 on New York’s 48th Street by Sire Records founder Seymour Stein for Marr, after the musician joked that The Smiths would sign up to the record label if Stein bought him a guitar.

The Gibson ES-355 had an estimate of £100,000 to 150,000 ($133,540 to $200,310), with the auctioneer's gavel being brought down on a bid of £160,000 ($213,664) to a buyer over the phone.

A custom-made signature guitar created for Marr's 2018 studio album "Call the Comet" and used to record the James Bond theme song "No Time to Die" with sibling artists Billie Eilish and Finneas and composer-producer Hans Zimmer, was sold at auction for £36,000 ($48,074) on the night.

The collection also featured vintage posters, amplifiers, tape recorders and other equipment, with estimates ranging from £500 to £150,000 ($668 to $200,310).

Marr is donating the full hammer price from 31 of the lots to the Guide Dogs for the Blind charity and the National Autistic Society, including the 10 guitars, 1980s concert posters and sales awards.

"The auction has been a great experience and has exceeded all my expectations," said Marr. "I'd like to thank everyone who made bids and special thanks to Christie's for making it so memorable."

The artist is also releasing his new album, "The Age Of Everything," on October 2.
