As Germany heads back to the polls for more local elections, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s grip on power is looking increasingly tenuous in the face of the rise of the far-right AfD.

Following the party’s success in Saxony-Anholt, Merz warned that there would be both national and international consequences.
