Lanterns, music and the glow of the autumn moon transformed a corner of Athens into a celebration of Chinese tradition, as Greek and Chinese families came together for the 2026 Mid-Autumn Festival.

Held in Heraklion, Attica, the event brought centuries-old traditions to a Greek audience through an evening of dance, poetry, music and performance.

The program featured dragon and lion dances, kung fu, traditional Chinese instruments, classical dance and children’s choirs, offering visitors a glimpse into one of China’s most important traditional festivals.

But the celebration was about more than spectacle.

Chinese and Greek performers shared the same stage, using poetry, music and dance to showcase their respective traditions and highlight the growing cultural links between the two countries.

Sino-Hellenic influencer Vassiliki Spentza said events like this give both sides the chance to learn more about one another.

"Giving us Greeks the opportunity to discover Chinese culture, and, in turn, Chinese people the opportunity to discover Greek culture," she said. "I think that's wonderful. I really love seeing this happening here in Greece."

The event was organized with the support of the Chinese Embassy, in cooperation with the China Cultural Center in Athens and the Municipality of Heraklion Attica.

Alongside the stage performances, visitors were introduced to traditional activities including lantern-making, poetry, games and Chinese cultural practices linked to the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Heraklion Attica Mayor Nikolaos Babalos said the wider aim was to bring communities closer through culture.

"Through events like these, and through the work that you and the municipality are doing, you bring people closer together," he said. "They get to know Chinese culture, and the Chinese get to know us."

The Mid-Autumn Festival is traditionally associated with reunion, family and the full moon, but in Athens this year it also became a platform for cultural exchange.

For organizers, the message was simple: ancient traditions can still create new connections.

Under one autumn moon, China and Greece came together – turning cultural diplomacy into something people could see, hear and share.
