For decades, quantum computing lived largely in theory. Today, the question is no longer if they will work, but how soon and for what.

Unlike conventional computers that process ones and zeros, quantum computers use qubits, which can exist in multiple states at once. They can be built in different ways, from superconducting circuits cooled to near absolute zero, to trapped ions and photons of light. Each approach holds promise, and each breakthrough brings us closer to what researchers call quantum advantage: the moment quantum computers outperform classical machines on real-world tasks.

RAZOR meets Dr. Richard Murray, CEO and co-founder of ORCA Computing, a UK startup pioneering photonic quantum computers that use light to process information. And in China, Hefei-based Origin Quantum recently unveiled the Wukong-180, a 180-qubit machine representing the cutting edge of large-scale superconducting systems.
