Every video call you make. Every dollar spent online. Every satellite signal that reaches your phone... someone, somewhere, is probably asking: who actually controls it?

It's part of a bigger push for self-reliance, or digital sovereignty, building the everyday technology governments can depend on without relying on anyone else.

France's government has already ordered its own officials off US platforms Zoom and Microsoft Teams, switching instead to a French-built alternative called Visio.

So just what does this all mean for the consumer? And when it comes to digital tech, which matters more: global cooperation or competition?
