As Greece enters another dangerous wildfire season, a new line of defense is already watching… from space.
Four thermal-imaging satellites are scanning the country's mountains, forests and islands around the clock, searching for the first signs of fire – even in remote areas where flames could otherwise go unnoticed.
The system, known as the Hellenic Fire System, is the world's first national satellite constellation built specifically to detect and track wildfires. Officials hope it will give firefighters the one thing they desperately need when every second counts: more time.
Unlike drones or ground cameras, the satellites can monitor huge areas of the country at once.
"People always ask why we need satellites when we have drones and cameras," said Ioannis Lantouris, Managing Director of OroraTech Greece. "For a large area, a drone and a camera will not be as effective as a satellite."
The satellites send thermal images back to Earth, where artificial intelligence analyzes the data, filters out false alarms and identifies hotspots as small as four by four meters.
Once a potential fire is confirmed, emergency commanders receive an alert showing its location, size and intensity, allowing crews and aircraft to be deployed faster – and scientists say those precious early moments can make all the difference.
"The few minutes gained through this process are extremely important," said Evangelos Gerasopoulos of the National Observatory of Athens. "They allow a full response to be mobilized and give us the opportunity to contain a wildfire during its early stages."
The satellite data is fed into FireHUB, a monitoring platform that combines thermal imagery with weather forecasts and fire-spread models to predict where flames are likely to move next.
Part of the system also draws on international scientific research. Its burned-area mapping uses a remote-sensing method developed by researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences before being adapted to Greece's terrain and fire conditions.
According to Haris Kontoes of the National Observatory of Athens, new satellite images are processed every five minutes, allowing thermal hotspots to be detected and sent to the Fire Service in near real time.
As hotter summers and longer fire seasons become the new normal, Greece is turning to space-age technology to stay one step ahead. The satellites cannot extinguish wildfires – but by detecting them sooner than ever before, they could help save forests, homes and lives.
