US says it's hit 90 targets in Iran
Since a new wave of tit-for-tat strikes between the US and Iran erupted on Tuesday (July 7) the US has hit approximately 90 Iranian military targets, according to officials in Washington.
The latest strikes have targeted air defense systems, missile and drone storage sites, and other assets.
In a statement posted on social media, US Central Command said the US had "completed an additional round of strikes against Iran, July 8, to further degrade Iran's ability to attack commercial shipping and innocent civilian mariners in the Strait of Hormuz."
The statement laid out how the "United States is holding Iran accountable for recent unjustified aggression against commercial shipping and civilian crews freely navigating a vital international waterway."
At a NATO summit on Wednesday, US president Donald Trump said he believes the ceasefire between the United States and Iran is effectively over, dismissing further negotiations as a waste of time and calling the country's leaders "liars" and "scum".
Tehran-Mashhad railway line hit by US as Khamenei's coffin arrives in northern city
The train service between Tehran and Mashhad has been suspended hours before Iran's late Supreme Leader Ali Khamanei is due to be buried in the holy city.
A plane carrying the body of the supreme leader landed in Mashhad on Thursday. The northern city will be Khamenei's final resting place after a week-long funeral, but many mourners' plans to attend the burial will reportedly be disrupted due to US strikes on the Tehran-Mashhad train line.
According to state media, the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways said a repair team had been dispatched after "a criminal attack by the US-Israeli enemy".
Iran's Revolutionary Guard accused the US of attempting to "overshadow" Khamenei's funeral after two bridges leading towards Mashhad were also hit.
The burial ceremony is still expected to go ahead. The slain Supreme Leader will be buried in the Iran's holiest shrine.
