The second World Conference of Classical Studies will be held at the Academy of Athens in Greece from June 9 to 10, bringing together around 200 scholars and experts from more than 20 countries to explore the relevance of classical wisdom in addressing contemporary global challenges.
Under the theme Dialogue between Ancient and Modern: Contemporary Inspirations from Classical Wisdom, the conference aims to promote dialogue among scholars of classical civilizations, culture, archeology, history and related fields while examining how insights from ancient traditions can contribute to modern society.
The event is jointly organized by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), China's Ministry of Education, China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Greece's Ministry of Culture, and the Academy of Athens.
According to organizers, participants will include scholars and researchers from leading universities, think tanks, and academic institutions in countries including China, Greece, Germany, Russia, France, Portugal, Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom, Japan, India, Egypt, South Africa, Nigeria, Canada, the United States, and Colombia.
Speaking at a press briefing in Beijing, Yue Yunxia, vice director of the Bureau of International Cooperation at CASS, said the conference would provide an important platform for academic exchange and consensus-building among researchers of classical civilizations worldwide.
The program will feature an opening ceremony and plenary session, followed by four parallel forums addressing key themes: classical education in the modern world; ethical communities from ancient to modern times; civilizational approaches to peace and global order; and the relationship between technology, artificial intelligence, and humanistic values.
Organizers said discussions would focus not only on the study of ancient civilizations but also on how classical traditions can offer perspectives on pressing contemporary issues, including conflict and peace, justice and governance, technological transformation, and intercultural dialogue.
A joint initiative highlighting the role of classical wisdom in addressing global challenges is expected to be released at the conclusion of the conference. Organizers will also launch an international visiting scholar program through the Chinese Institute of Classical Civilization Studies.
Alongside the conference, an exhibition titled Bringing Classics into the Modern World will showcase classical texts, research publications, archeological achievements, cultural heritage preservation projects, traditional Chinese art, and interactive technology experiences.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to explore traditional Chinese medicine through immersive displays and activities.
