Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to visit China from May 19 to May 20 for high-level talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, in what analysts see as another important step in the strengthening of the China-Russia strategic partnership. 

The visit comes only days after Xi hosted US President Donald Trump in Beijing, placing China at the center of intense global diplomacy.

According to Kremlin statements and Chinese media reports, the talks are expected to focus on trade, energy cooperation, transport corridors, global security, and coordination on major international issues. 

Russian and Chinese officials have repeatedly described relations between the two countries as being at their highest level in modern history.

Putin and Xi have met more than 40 times since Xi took office in 2013, making their relationship one of the most active among world leaders. 

Xi has visited Russia multiple times, including major state visits in 2015, 2019, 2023 and 2025, while Putin has frequently traveled to China for bilateral summits, Belt and Road forums and commemorative events.

Economic ties between the two countries have expanded rapidly in recent years. 

Bilateral trade exceeded $240 billion last year, according to official Chinese and Russian statistics, with energy exports remaining a central pillar of cooperation. Moscow has also increasingly redirected trade toward Asian markets amid Western sanctions.

The timing of Putin's visit is attracting particular attention because it happens after Trump's high-profile trip to Beijing. 

Analysts say Xi is attempting to position China simultaneously as a stabilizing global actor and a power capable of maintaining strategic dialogue with both Washington and Moscow.

In Moscow, many residents expressed hope the visit could contribute to broader international stability. "I sincerely hope that we will achieve a mutual understanding, as previous meetings have shown, our strategic interests coincide. We understand how the world should develop in the near future," said Moscow resident Rifat.

Economic and technological cooperation 

Others linked the visit to wider geopolitical negotiations. 

"A few days ago, the US president met Xi. Then Putin will come. I think they are resolving some important world affairs." said Moscow resident Mark, while his companion Tatyana added: "Yes, I think they are negotiating there. The Chinese President is like the middle link between them."

The visit is expected to produce new agreements in economic and technological cooperation while reaffirming what both sides describe as a comprehensive strategic partnership in an increasingly uncertain global environment.
