Globally, about one-third of all the food we grow is lost or wasted, that's over a billion tons each year. And that's not even taking into account the by-products.
What if there was a way to turn some of that waste into a resource?
HUID, A UK-based biotech startup, may have found a surprising solution, turning discarded onion skins into sustainable paper and packaging. Rich in cellulose and naturally antimicrobial, this waste product becomes a biodegradable alternative to plastic.
RAZOR's Neil Cairns finds out how onion skins are transformed into a variety of products. Founder Renuka Ramanujam has brought in the expertise of C-Source Renewables and Nafici Environmental Research to help with the challenge of scaling up.
