RAZOR: The hidden power of fungi

There is a secret world beneath our feet, quietly sustaining all forms of life. A vast network of fungi exists in our soil, many living symbiotically with the plants around us. Through carefully intricate connections with their roots, fungi help to recycle nutrients and lock up CO2 in the soil. So important is the relationship between fungi and plants, scientists believe the partnership was the main factor allowing the emergence of life on land.

But fungi are in trouble. Habitat loss and land use changes have degraded the soil, destroying many species of fungi, and scientists believe we are losing fungal species faster than animals.

RAZOR's Gabrielle Lawrence went fungi hunting in Scotland with a team of mycologists from Rhizocore, who are on a mission to preserve these dwindling species, whilst creating a tree saving solution using fungi.
