Against the backdrop of the historic Zappeion Megaron, Greece and China sealed fresh partnerships this week, billing the event as a meeting of two of the world's oldest civilizations with a decidedly modern twist.

The highlight: a sister-city pact linking Chongqing's Yuzhong District with Elliniko–Argyroupoli. The deal was signed alongside wider agreements covering urban planning, education, sustainability and cultural cooperation.

"China and Greece both have a long history and culture. Our friendship is deep-rooted and enduring, built on mutual trust and shared responsibility," said Hu Kaihong from China's State Council Information Office.

Over 150 delegates from government, academia and business filled the halls for the flagship dialogue Ancient Cities, New Vitality. Organizers pitched the gathering as proof that city-level cooperation can strengthen the broader strategic partnership between Athens and Beijing.

"Even in antiquities, China and Greece have walked together. These exchanges strengthen understanding and keep our ancient cultures alive today," said Ioannis Theofanopoulos, head of the Greece–China Friendship Association.

The talks ran alongside an exhibition charting Chongqing's urban transformation — from modern skylines to the preservation of UNESCO treasures such as the Dazu Rock Carvings and Baiheliang inscriptions.

"Chongqing values cooperation at the local level. Working with Athens lets us exchange ideas on culture, education, and sustainable growth," said Zhao Deming, Vice Minister of Chongqing.

The first day ended with cultural programs and performances, underscoring how tradition and innovation can blend in the 21st century.

Organizers say the Athens dialogue aims to turn exchanges into real projects, spanning tourism, education, and heritage protection. Both sides insist the ultimate goal is to keep history alive — while building new bridges for the next generation.
