Cross-border strikes

Russia's Defence Ministry said its air defences intercepted 93 Ukrainian drones overnight; Ukraine's air force said 15 Russian drones hit eight locations and that a further 61 Russian drones were shot down.

The Security Service of Ukraine has claimed their drones struck the Shahed launch airfield at Primorsko-Akhtarsk and the Elektropribor electronics plant in Penza.

Flights at Sochi airport were temporarily grounded after a fuel tank at an oil depot was set ablaze after being struck, Krasnodar regional Governor Veniamin Kondratyev said. Three people were reportedly killed in the strikes on Penza, Samara and Rostov regions.

The exchange follows a Russian barrage of Iskender missiles and Shahed drones on Kyiv Wednesday night killing 31 people and wounding some 150 more.

Submarines on standby

On Friday, President Trump announced that he had ordered two submarines whose usual payload includes Trident D5 nuclear missiles be moved to “appropriate regions” closer to Russian waters, in response to “reckless rhetoric” from former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev.

The Guardian, cites analysts who interpret the announcement as a “rhetorical escalation”, given that the U.S. already has nuclear-powered submarines deployed that are capable of striking Russia.

Diplomacy

U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to arrive in Moscow this weekend for what have been referred to as "exploratory" cease-fire talks.

The Visit comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin said Friday that he wanted peace but that his demands for ending Moscow's military offensive were “unchanged”.

President Trump has threatened tariffs and broad secondary sanctions if no progress is made by 8 August.
