The China Three Gorges corporation is the largest clean energy group in China – and has been investing heavily in European renewables too.
China adds more renewable capacity annually than the rest of the world combined and is increasingly exporting that knowledge and know-how, working side-by-side with European partners.
Although China Three Gorges Europe (CTGE) is active in Germany, Italy, Poland, Portugal and beyond, Spain is fast emerging as a preferred partner thanks to its green ambitions and abundant sun.
"The last operation carried out by CTG Europe in Spain is a plant with nearly 500MW in the region of Murcia," Liu Fei, CTGE's chief financial officer, tells CGTN in Madrid.
That's the Mula solar plant - the biggest in the country, part of over $1 billion the company has already spent this decade in Spain.
"Our activity has focused on the purchase of solar and wind assets. We are currently active in seven Spanish autonomous communities and have installed capacity around two gigawatts."
'CTGE formally committed to EU energy transition'
CTGE had a delegation at the awards night hosted by Catedra China - a Spanish organization promoting China-Spain cooperation.
The company received an award for its "commitment to decarbonization in Spain, new energy cooperation, the interchange of personnel between the two countries and the promotion of bilateral relations."
"We'd like to thank Catedra China for this recognition," Liu Fei said on receiving the award.
"China Three Gorges Europe is a good example of a company where we are many coworkers from Spain, China and other countries working together smoothly and CTGE is formally committed to the EU energy transition."

With a team of 200 professionals from 10 different nationalities, CTGE says that "collaboration between our cultures is a real driver of our company's growth."
Spain's ambassador to China, Marta Betanzos Roig, was also at the Catedra China ceremony in Madrid.
"Solar, wind, offshore, inshore – I mean, it's like, you know, getting into science fiction," she said. "China is a very innovative economy and is developing the highest technologies regarding digital transition and also energy transition.
"And in this regard, China is cooperating closely with Spain because, of course, Spain, we are very much engaged in this kind of new approach to a sustainable economy. I believe that China and Spain, we can be very complementary."
Can Spain be China's 'connector country?'
Spain is trying to position itself as a connector country between China and Europe. After Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez' official visit in September last year, Spain abstained on the EU's Chinese electric car tariffs vote, and now China is investing heavily in Spain's goal to become a green energy leader.

In this past year we've had confirmation of Chinese carmaker Chery's investment in a $425 million car factory joint venture with EV Motors in Barcelona, Chinese electric car battery maker CATL's investment in a $4.3 billion gigafactory joint venture with Stellantis in Zaragoza, and the Hygreen and Envision Group sign off on $2.2 billion dollars worth of green hydrogen projects, mostly in Andalusia.
CTGE is also ready to invest in other new technologies, says Liu Fei: "We want to work on the development of the storage battery as well as other energy sources such as green hydrogen."
China is helping accelerate Europe's green transformation – and Spain is fast emerging as a preferred partner.
