China has reiterated its commitment to driving global economic growth while supporting environmental goals, including those of the Paris climate change agreement.

China's ambassador to the UK, Zheng Zeguang, told an audience at the 48 Group Club's annual dinner that Beijing's relations with London had been improving in recent months against a background of global tensions and a rise of unilateralism.

Earlier in the week, incoming U.S. president Donald Trump announced he would withdraw from the 2016 UN-backed Paris agreement aimed at limiting global temperature rises. He has also threatened to disrupt global trade by imposing large tariffs on a large portion of imports.

"China remains the biggest engine driving the world economy, and keeps providing certainty to this uncertain world," Zheng said, adding: "We will keep up our efforts to fight climate change and work tirelessly to reduce carbon emissions and pollution, develop renewable energy, and protect the environment."

His comments follow the publication of a research paper by the Chatham House research institute calling for greater cooperatiion between the UK and China on climate issues. The paper cited the countries' shared belief in evidence-driven decision-making as well as their advanced technologies and ambitious approaches on environmental issues.

Speaking at the 48 Group Club's Chinese New Year dinner, Ambassador Zheng urged his audience to use the year of the snake to follow the example of the club's founder members - known as the Icebreakers - who defied Cold War thinking to form business links with China.

"Let's work together to carry forward the "icebreaking" spirit, build more bridges for communication, connect our two economies more closely and deepen the friendship between our two peoples," he said.
