UK can forge its own path in relations with China, Cowper-Coles says

The UK should prioritize its own economic interests in dealings with China, rather than pursuing U.S. led policies, according to former British diplomat Sherard Cowper Coles.

In an interview for CGTN Europe and CCCUK's Leaders' Lounge series, Cowper-Coles, Chairman of the China-Britain Business Council (CBBC), shared insights into the profound transformation of China's economy and its implications for UK-China relations. 

"We can't achieve our net-zero goals without Chinese battery technology and renewable energy solutions," he said, underscoring the necessity of international cooperation in combating climate change.

Cowper-Coles highlighted the importance of avoiding politicization of business engagements, citing the UK's removal of Huawei equipment from its telecom network, which he argued was more influenced by American pressure than genuine national security concerns.

"Britain needs to stand up for its own national interests," he asserted, calling for a balanced approach that prioritizes the UK's economic opportunities while navigating the complexities of international relations.

A deep relationship

With a career spanning decades, Cowper-Coles has witnessed the dramatic changes in China since his first visit in 1985 when bicycles dominated the streets of Beijing.

Reflecting on his early interest in China, Cowper-Coles recounted how a history teacher at his boarding school sparked his curiosity about the country's rich past, from the struggles of the Chinese Republic to the rise of the Communist Party. Although he initially chose Arabic while entering the diplomatic service, he has built a career focused on fostering ties between the UK and China.

During the interview, Cowper-Coles emphasized the importance of mutual understanding and cooperation. He recounted a light-hearted moment with Premier Li Qiang, who laughed at his attempts to speak Mandarin.

Cowper-Coles noted that despite the challenges posed by regulatory environments and language barriers, the rewards of engaging with China are substantial. He shared an inspiring story about a small business owner from Yorkshire who became a millionaire after receiving a substantial order for jukeboxes from China, showcasing the transformative potential of this vast market.

When asked about the current geopolitical climate, Cowper-Coles acknowledged the difficulties posed by shifting political landscapes in the UK, particularly under the leadership of multiple prime ministers in quick succession. However, he expressed optimism that the new government might usher in a more pragmatic approach to China, emphasizing the importance of collaboration, especially in sectors like green technology.
