The UK's Labour Party has won the UK general election after securing at least 410 members of parliament, ending 14 years of Conservative rule.

Labour leader Keir Starmer has vowed to bring change to Britain as its next prime minister after his Labour Party increased its represetation by 210.

The Conservative Party, led by Rishi Sunak, will have at least 115 places in parliament, the worst Tory defeat since the political party was founded in 1834.

Sunak has said that "there is much to learn and reflect on and I take responsibility for the loss to the many good hardworking Conservative candidates ... I am sorry."

Despite the Labour Party's win, polls have suggested there is little enthusiasm for Starmer or his party, and he comes to power at a time when the country is facing a series of daunting challenges.

Labour gained around 35% of votes, slightly more than the 32.1% they took during a heavy defeat in the 2019 election. The reason for the dramatic change in fortunes is that, as support for the ruling Conservatives dropped, Labour became the biggest party in many areas. The UK's First Past the Post electoral system therefore means they are allocated places in parliament, or seats, in each of these areas.

Smaller parties such as The Greens and right-wing Reform who gained votes around the country were the relative losers, picking up only a handful of seats each in areas where their support was concentrated enough to make them number one.

The results of a few seats where counting continues will confirmed through the day.
