Italy has the oldest population in the European Union, with one in four citizens aged over 65 - and some are decidedly agile. For instance, the country now proudly boasts the world's fastest ninetysomething female sprinter - Emma Maria Mazzenga.

Born on August 1, 1933, Mazzenga continues to defy age-related stereotypes, clinching yet another world record in the 90-and-over age group this month. In a remarkable feat of athleticism, she blazed through the 200 meters outdoors in an astonishing 51.47 seconds, solidifying her status as a true hero in the world of masters sprinting.

Modestly reflecting on her extraordinary achievement, Mazzenga expressed her happiness and surprise, stating, "I am very happy and satisfied, and also a bit surprised because I didn't think I went that fast." Her remarkable time surpassed the previous record set by Japan's Emiko Saito in 2022.

Mazzenga's athletic prowess extends beyond this recent victory, as she currently holds an impressive tally of five world records, nine European records, and 28 best Italian performances across various categories of Masters sprinting.

Despite the absence of direct rivals in her W90 category, Mazzenga remains dedicated to her craft, adhering to meticulous pre-race rituals and relishing in the camaraderie of her fellow runners. Known for running strictly without socks and never wearing the same shoes as for training, she finds joy in celebrating her successes with a refreshing beer post-race.

Reflecting on her journey, Mazzenga reveals that running has been a source of solace and companionship throughout her life. After initially pursuing running as a young woman, she took a hiatus to focus on family life. However, her return to the track at the age of 53 marked the beginning of a new chapter filled with athletic achievements and personal fulfillment.

Looking ahead, Mazzenga sets her sights on upcoming competitions, including the Italian championships in June and the world championships in Sweden next year. Despite her remarkable achievements, she maintains a lighthearted approach to long-term planning, preferring to take each race as it comes.

As Mazzenga continues to inspire individuals of all ages, she embodies the timeless adage that age is truly just a number in the pursuit of one's dreams.
