The European Union and China should work together to help tackle threats and harness opportunities from new technologies, according to Slovakia's foreign minister.

In an interview with CGTN Europe, Juraj Blanár said such collaboration would also help develop the broader relationship between the two powers.

"The creation of joint working groups to address digital security, data protection and internet regulation could lead to safer and more efficient digital market cooperation in combating cybercrime and exchanging information would also create trust," he said.

Both the EU and China have taken leading positions in setting standards for the use of artificial intelligence and to protect citizens from harmful material on social media and the wider internet. However, until now such measures have not been internationally replicated.

Blanár noted that cross-continental engagement with new technologies would also help address other global challenges such as disease, famine and poverty.

Climate change is a key focus for both partners and Blanár noted that only by working together could the ambitious targets of each be aligned.

"The EU and China recognize climate change as a global challenge requiring coordinating international effort," he said. "Continuing dialog and cooperation will be essential to align these ambitions and timelines."
