China says it welcomes a UN Security Council resolution for an immediate and lasting ceasefire in Gaza and has urged swift action to implement a halt in the fighting.

But the day after the breakthrough vote at UN headquarters in New York, the conflict continues.

The Hamas-run health ministry says 81 Palestinians were killed in the past 24 hours. Israeli strikes around the Al Shifa hospital in the north destroyed a residential compound with around 30 members of the same family being killed.

Meanwhile in the south, more homes were targeted in Rafah, where Israel believes Hamas fighters are taking shelter. Health authorities said at least 18 people, including eight children were killed in a strike on a family home. Two hospitals in Khan Younis continue to be surrounded by IDF forces.

While food continues to be scarce across Gaza, the Hamas-run health authorities say 12 people drowned while trying to retrieve aid dropped by air which landed in the sea. Six others are reported to have been killed in a stampede for aid.

On Tuesday the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs called on Israel to revoke a ban on UNWRA food deliveries to northern Gaza, saying people there were facing a "cruel death by famine."

It comes as Britain becomes the latest country to airdrop food and supplies into Gaza, with Royal Air Force planes dropping 10 tonnes of supplies.

At a news briefing, China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said "The United Nations Security Council's resolutions are binding, and we demand that the parties fulfil their obligations under the Charter of the United Nations and take due action as required by the resolutions."

He added that Beijing expects countries with influence in the region to play an active role in implementing the ceasefire resolution.
