The Busójárás festival traces its origins back to the 16th century, rooted in a historic strategy by local populations to repel Ottoman invaders.

This courageous feat, involving the donning of fearsome masks and crossing the Danube, symbolizes a tale of resilience and ingenuity passed down through generations. Today, the festival not only serves as a commemoration of this significant victory but also stands as a vibrant celebration of cultural heritage and communal unity.

At its core are the Busos, individuals adorned in elaborate costumes, reflecting the festival's enduring significance and the deep familial bonds shared by participants like Lázlo Mólnar, who devote extensive time and effort to preserving this cherished tradition.

The Busójárás festival attracts visitors from around the world - CGTN spoke to one from Mongolia, who expressed fascination with its unique blend of history and culture.

Central to the festival are intricately crafted masks, cherished as heirlooms by families like Gabor Hoffman's, reflecting a deep reverence for tradition and ensuring the event's authenticity and continuity.

Despite the festival's enduring spirit and vibrant cultural expressions, there are growing concerns about climate change impacting its traditional timing as a harbinger of spring.

With warmer weather encroaching on winter months, questions arise regarding the festival's long-term viability and its deep-rooted connection to natural cycles.

Nevertheless, the Busójárás festival in Mohács remains a testament to human creativity, resilience, and the enduring power of tradition, serving as a beacon of cultural pride and community unity amidst changing environmental conditions.
