China is "deeply concerned about the sharp escalation of the conflict" in Gaza and Israel, China's Middle East special envoy Zhai Jun said, adding that the fundamental way out of the crisis was to implement the two-state solution and establish an independent Palestinian state.
Zhai Jun, who is visiting the Middle Eastern region, made the remarks at the Cairo Summit for Peace, called by Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi to de-escalate the conflict in Gaza.
He told to his colleagues – leaders and representatives from 31 states including Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Britain, France, Germany, Brazil and Russia, as well as Palestinian representatives – that China condemned all acts that harm civilians, opposed any violation of international law, and was urging the immediate cessation of military operations that could fuel the situation.

He added that China was closely following the development of the conflict, stating that the continuous escalation of the fighting between the two sides once again proved that the Palestinian issue should not be ignored and forgotten.
Stressing the need for the further opening of corridors for humanitarian relief, the envoy also called on the international community to be objective and impartial on the Palestinian issue and take concrete measures.
Zhai went on to suggest the UN convene a more authoritative, influential and wide-ranging international peace conference as soon as possible, so as to pool international consensus on promoting peace as well as a comprehensive, just and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue as early as possible.
China will continue to work with relevant parties to make efforts to end the conflict in Gaza as soon as possible, he said, adding that it would also keep on supporting the Palestinian people in restoring their legitimate rights, push to implement the two-state solution, and help to realize lasting peace and security in the Middle East.
Having already spoken with the foreign ministry heads of the Palestinians, Israelis and Egyptians, as well as with the special representatives of the UN and EU, Zhai is now set to visit the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and other countries in the region to strengthen coordination aimed at ending the crisis.
