IN DEPTH

Prigozhin confirmed among crash victims

Russia says genetic testing has confirmed the identities of the 10 people who died in a plane crash last Wednesday and that they included the founder of the Wagner mercenary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin.

"As part of the investigation of the plane crash in the Tver region, molecular-genetic examinations have been completed," Russia's Investigative Committee said in a statement on the Telegram messaging app.

The cause of the jet crash is under review. Investigators working on the crash site recovered the private jet's black box.

There has been speculation on pro-Wagner Telegram channels about Prigozhin's fate. He was known to take various security measures in anticipation of a possible attempt on his life.

But he has been seen by some analysts as a dead man walking after staging a mutiny against Russian military commanders two months ago.

The move was initially described by Russian President Vladimir Putin as a "stab in the back", but he later met with Prigozhin in the Kremlin.

Russia said on Saturday Western allegations it orchestrated Prigozhin's killing are an "absolute lie."

Putin sent his condolences to the families of those killed in the crash last week.
