The French seaside golf resort Le Touquet has been given the green light by Britain's King Charles III to rename its airport after his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II.

"The International Airport of Le Touquet Paris-Plage is about to undergo a historic transformation by taking on the name Elizabeth II International Airport of Le Touquet Paris-Plage," the resort's town hall said in a statement.

Mayor Daniel Fasquelle's request for a name change came within a week of the monarch's death at the age of 96 in September 2022. An inauguration date has yet to be set.

"This is a tribute to a great Queen and her uncle who had a fondness for France," the statement read, adding that the Queen accompanied her uncle Edward VII to the resort on several occasions as a child.

According to the town hall, Edward VII enjoyed horseback riding and sand yachting on his visits to Le Touquet, which is an hour away from Calais. French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife also own a holiday home in the town.

While the airport currently does not offer regular passenger flights, it retains strong links to the UK and is set to house the England rugby union team for the World Cup training camp starting on September 8.
