Fushun's century-old coal mine transformed into tourist hub

Located in China's northeastern province of Liaoning, Fushun used to rely heavily on its coal reserves – even residential buildings were surrounded by coal pits at the time. The past five years have seen Fushun transform from a land of "devastation" to a leisure paradise for local residents. The project team now sees even brighter futures for the city and is working to further tap into its economic potential as a green city.

 

Perseid meteor shower enthralls China's skygazers

The Perseid meteor shower has wowed spectators in China's Jiangsu province, with clear night skies making the showers particularly vibrant. The collection of scattered fragments is known as the Perseid cluster and extends along the pathway of the Swift-Tuttle comet's orbit. The cluster is made up of particles discharged by the comet as it journeys on its 133-year-long orbital path.

Taikonauts carry out experiments on liquid at space station

The Shenzhou-16 mission crew has been carrying out fluid mechanics experiments in the orbiting Tiangong space station. According to the China Manned Space Agency, the findings could help bolster research in biomedicine, materials science, engineering and other scientific fields.

 

Tang Dynasty animation becomes one of China's highest grossing animated movies

New animated film Chang An, featuring some of the country's most well-known poets, is drumming up interest in traditional Chinese culture, and even leading to a boom in the cultural tourism market. Since its release on July 8, the film has become the second highest-grossing animated film of China.

Kayaking to work: Shanghai commuters trade in traffic jams for scenic waterways

Shanghai commuters have been skipping traffic jams, opting instead for a quicker route to work where they get to glide by peaceful views of local scenery and urban wildlife. Known for starting trends throughout China, the city has recently seen busy office workers take to the city's waterways by kayak on their commute to work. Many have found it a pleasant alternative to their usual drive. 

 

Chilling by Sichuan: Two giant panda cubs enjoy afternoon tea

And last but not least, two adorable giant panda cubs were caught on camera sitting side by side enjoying their afternoon tea of milk and bamboo shoots at the Wolong Shenshuping panda base in Sichuan.
