China has advised its citizens in France to be cautious after a bus carrying Chinese tourists in Marseille had its windows smashed with several people injured during mass riots over the police killing of a teenager.

The bus was damaged during violence which has hit French cities following the death of Nahel M, a 17-year-old of North African descent was shot dead by police at a traffic stop last Tuesday.

"A Chinese tour group was affected by riots during their tour in Marseille, France,"  said Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said on Monday.

"The windows of the bus they were traveling in were smashed and several people sustained minor injuries," he added.

The Chinese Consulate General in Marseille, Wang said, had immediately activated its protection emergency service, assisted the tour group in calling the police and followed the emergency situation closely.

"The group of tourists has now ended their trip to France ahead of schedule and returned home safely," said Wang.

"We once again remind Chinese citizens in France to pay close attention to the local security situation, go out cautiously, stay away from demonstrations and violent conflict areas, and strengthen security precautions."

China's Consulate General in Marseille complained to France over the weekend about the incident.

The consular office added in a statement that Chinese citizens in France or heading to France should "strengthen prevention" and be "more vigilant and cautious" in light of the riots.

Protests across France appeared to be less intense on Sunday, as tens of thousands of police were deployed in cities across the country, with only 130 arrests reported nationwide by the French interior ministry.
