The Chinese embassy in the UK on Sunday attacked the meeting of a senior British politician with a Taiwan official, calling it "grossly interferes in China's internal affairs."

A spokesperson of the Chinese embassy in the UK made the comment while asked for a response to a meeting between British Security Minister Tom Tugendhat and Audrey Tang from Taiwan.

In a statement a Chinese spokesperson said the British had allowed the visit of a certain Taiwan figure and arranged her meetings with British officials. The spokesperson called it a "serious violation" of the one-China principle, as well as the basic norm of international relations, sending wrong signals to the "Taiwan Independence" secessionist forces which it said had "grossly" interfered in China's internal affairs.

The spokesperson reiterated Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory and said the Taiwan question was purely China's internal affairs. The one-China principle is also the political foundation for the diplomatic relationship between China and the UK, said the spokesperson, urging the UK to abide by the basic norm of international relations and the universal consensus of the international community.

China urged the UK to stop official exchanges with the Taiwan authorities, and stop emboldening separatist forces for "Taiwan independence", warned the embassy, adding "any actions that undermine China's interests will be met with resolute responses."
