Chinese ambassador to the UK: De-risking can lead to real risks

It is the U.S., not China, who has been creating risks, said Zheng Zeguang, Chinese Ambassador to the United Kingdom on Thursday, warning that so-called "de-risking" could create real risks.

Zheng made the remarks in response to the "de-risking" strategy promoted by the U.S. and G7 countries, while attending a meeting of Chinese and British business people and academics.

The U.S. has been imposing unilateral sanctions and long-arm jurisdictions against other countries for a long time, said Zheng. He referred to the 2008 global financial crisis triggered by the subprime mortgage problems, as well as the high inflation caused by U.S. policies such as quantitative easing, shrinking of balance sheets and raising of interest rates.

"The U.S. has also come up with a series of protective industrial policies including massive subsidies for its domestic companies, leading to the disturbance of global economic order and causing serious troubles to the peace, stability and prosperity of the world," said Zheng.

On the contrary, said the ambassador, China has contributed 38.6 percent yearly on average to the world economy from 2013 to 2021, higher than the sum total of the G7 countries. According to the predictions of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), China's contribution to the world's economic growth could reach one third of the total in 2023.

Meanwhile, China remains to be the main trade partner of over 140 countries and regions, with a total direct investment of $320 million on a daily basis to the world. Every month, there are more than 3,000 foreign companies established in China. With a middle class of 400 million people and still growing, China is now the biggest potential consumer market of the world, he said.

"Obviously, China's development is bringing peace, stability and prosperity to the world, instead of challenges or risks."

The "de-risking" with China proposed by the U.S. and its allies has no difference to "de-coupling" in its essence, which aims to block the scientific progress and economic growth of China, curbing its development, added the ambassador. It has violated the market rules and trends of the time, brought harm to the world, sabotaged the global industrial supply chain, and could lead to increased division.

Zheng called on the far-sighted personage of the UK to distinguish the harms of the "de-risking," and carry on the dialogue and cooperation under the global rules and win-win principle, to expand new areas for cooperation, and come up with new achievement.
