The World Health Organization has rejected a bid for Taiwan to be granted observer status, in a move described by Beijing as a victory for its One-China principle.

Belize had proposed that the island be allowed to attend the annual meeting taking place this month.

"This fully demonstrates that the One China principle is the aspiration of the international community and the trend of the times, and no challenge is allowed," China's foreign ministry said in a statement.

China warned other countries from interfering in what it considers its internal affairs. The foreign ministry also dismissed suggestions that excluding Taiwan could leave a gap in the global pandemic response, pointing out that it offered regular support and information to authorities in Taipei.
