Spring festival celebrations

Diverse folk activities and light shows have been staged across China during the week-long Lunar New Year holiday, the most important festival for Chinese people, which fell on Sunday this year. 

In Puning County, Jieyang City of south China's Guangdong province, the Yingge dance -  centuries-old form of traditional folk dance combining dancing, Chinese martial arts, and Chinese opera - was performed. 

In Gaoping City of north China's Shanxi province, performers dressed as Sun Wukong, a mythological figure also known as the Monkey King, and Zhu Bajie (Pigsy) from the famous Chinese novel Journey to the West, interacted with the audience, bringing waves of laughter and cheers from them. 

 

China's lunar rover beams back new images 

China's lunar rover Yutu-2 has worked for more than four years, traveled nearly 1,500 meters in total, and released more than 940.1 gigabytes (GB) of scientific data. 

The China National Space Administration released a group of new photos from Yutu-2, showing the wheel track left by the rover, some rocks and a small impact crater on the lunar surface.

Earthquake hits Sichuan

A 5.6-magnitude earthquake hit Luding County of southwest China's Sichuan province with a focal depth of 11 kilometers, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center. 

Residents in Moxi town, which is close to the epicenter, felt the earthquake strongly. An investigation into the disaster has been launched.

 

China-built power plant helps Sri Lanka

A coal power plant in Sri Lanka, built and financed by China, has improved the quality of life for locals. It has made electricity available to thousands of households, which has helped brighten livelihoods. 

The Norochcholai Coal Power Plant is Sri Lanka's biggest electric power generation base. Since its operation, the plant's power generation plugs around 40 percent of Sri Lanka's total electricity demand.

 

White Rabbit expands beyond sweets

China's iconic candy brand White Rabbit is gaining popularity among the youth with trendy products based on the rabbit image, attracting more fans during the Spring Festival ushering in the Year of the Rabbit. 

The White Rabbit candy, made by Shanghai-based Guan Sheng Yuan Group since 1959, is the company's flagship product and a household name in China. 

The candy brand has launched a variety of niche flavors including coffee, durian and mustard. It has also collaborated with other businesses and put the white rabbit image on their products.

Decoding magical stunts of opera

Wearing flamboyant costumes and changing multiple exquisite masks, the performers of Bian Lian or face changing, are very popular with the audience. This magical stunt is an important subgenre of the Chinese Sichuan Opera originating from the southwest Sichuan Province. 

The Sichuan Opera is one of China's oldest and most popular art forms, which has a history of over 300 years. It features singing, strong acting, rich percussion and comedy acts.
