During the Second World War, thousands of Chinese men came to Britain – a vital labour force for the country's Merchant Navy during the conflict. Many settled in and around Liverpool, marrying locals and starting a family.

But when the conflict ended, rather than celebrating their contribution, the British government forcibly repatriated thousands of men, often simply taking them up from their homes and sending them back to China which was still in the midst of a civil war.. Relatives were left shocked and confused, often with no knowledge at all as to what had happened.

More than 75 years later the families of these forgotten allies are fighting for an apology,  and details of what happened to their fathers and grandfathers.

In this editon of The Agenda, Juliet Mann hears from some of these men's living relatives and speaks to local MP Kim Johnson who's helping to drive their campaign. She also talks to John Belchem, Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Liverpool for his take on another shameful episode from Britain's past.
