The European Commission has released its latest proposal for a ninth package of sanctions against Russia, including adding almost 200 additional individuals and entities on the sanctions list.
Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement the EU was also proposing to introduce sanctions against three additional Russian banks.
She added that the bloc's executive also wanted to impose new export controls and restrictions, especially for dual-use goods like key chemicals, nerve agents, electronics and IT components.
"Russia continues to bring death and devastation to Ukraine," she wrote in a post on Twitter. "We stand by Ukraine and we are making Russia pay for its cruelty.
"The existing eight packages of sanctions we introduced so far are already biting hard," she added. "Today we are stepping up the pressure on Russia with a ninth package."
In an accompanying video, she also accused Moscow of kidnapping Ukrainian children and purposefully targeting civilian energy infrastructure.
She added that the new sanctions would specifically target industries that could benefit "Russia's war machine."
