German and Estonian forces ran joint NATO exercises in Amari, Estonia on Monday, as part of the Baltic Tiger 2022 training.

NATO has increased its presence on its eastern flank since Russia's attack on Ukraine began in February, heightening the threat of nuclear war, and a new brigade of the German army will join 1,500 soldiers already stationed in Estonia.

The German military has also supplied Estonia with six Eurofighter aircraft to be stationed at the Amari air base, 25 miles southeast of Estonia's capital, Tallin, until April next year.

Estonian lawmakers recently declared Russia a "terrorist regime" after Russia's absorption of four Ukrainian oblasts – Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson. At a meeting in September, Estonian defense minister Hanno Pevkur said there is an answer to Vladimir Putin's nuclear threats, saying "It is important to understand that NATO has action plans in place to respond to the nuclear threat, i.e. NATO's nuclear umbrella is working."
