The first images of the damage to the Nord Stream pipeline under the Baltic Sea have been released by the Swedish newspaper Expressen.

At least fifty meters of twisted metal and a massive tear appear to be visible in the footage.

Copenhagen police said the damage was caused by "powerful explosions" after an investigation was launched by Swedish and Danish authorities to determine the cause.

Kremlin spokesperson Demitri Peskov said, "elementary logic" shows that the damage caused to the pipeline was not in the interests of Russia and that the investigation was being carried out "secretively" without the involvement of Moscow.

Peskov questioned the motive of the investigation, saying "The main thing is the way it looks in public, according to statements we are hearing from Germany, from France, and from Denmark: This investigation was set up inherently to put the blame on Russia."

Russian officials have previously said that Washington is to blame, wanting to sell more liquified natural gas (LNG) to Europe but this accusation was rejected by U.S. President Joe Biden, who said it was a 'deliberate act of sabotage.'

Vladimir Putin suggested Russian gas could make its way into Europe this winter using a section of the Nord Stream pipelines that still remain intact and also rerouting volumes via Turkiye.
