British author Salman Rushdie has been attacked on stage at an event in New York.

He had been subjected to death threats following his 1988 novel The Satanic Verses, which was seen by some Muslims as blasphemous and had spent many years in hiding.

A man ran onto the stage at the stage at the event in Chautauqua County and struck Rushdie. Police confirmed a man had been stabbed.
