UK prime minister Boris Johnson will resign today, several media outlets, including the BBC reported.

Johnson had been hanging onto power despite the resignation of a string of his ministers, seniopr and junior. On Thursday, the man he appointed as finance minister less than 48 hours earlier publicly urged Johnson to go.

A spokesperson said that Johnson would soon "make a statement to the country," in which he is expected to announce his decision.

The BBC reported that Johnson wants to remain prime minister until the Conservative Party conference in autumn.

However, further reports in British media suggested that MPs are proposing he step aside immediately so that his deputy, Dominic Raab, can take over as interim prime minister.

Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland's first minister, stated that it was "not sustainable" for Johnson to remain until autumn.

Ministers in revolt

More than 50 ministers, including the previous finance minister, quit after Johnson was accused of lying over a government appointment. Many said they had lost confidence following a series of recent crises, including a police fine that Johnson received for attending one of a number of parties at his Downing Street residence.

Keir Starmer, the leader of Britain's opposition Labour Party, said Johnson's expected resignation was "good news for the country."

"We don't need to change the Tory at the top – we need a proper change of government," Starmer said. "We need a fresh start for Britain."

On Tuesday, Johnson said it would be irresponsible to walk away from the job in the middle of an economic crisis and war in Europe.

He also refused to say if he would try to stay in the job even if he lost a confidence vote from his own lawmakers. He only narrowly won a similar poll last month.
