Chinese climate change envoy Xie Zhenhua has promised China will strive to plant 70 billion trees in the next 10 years in a speech setting out China's approach to climate change at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos.

With China hosting the COP15 biodiversity summit in the city of Kunming, China has taken a leading position in taking measures to protect its own natural resources and encouraging other countries to do the same.

In his speech Xie said China had always actively promoted the process of global climate governance.

Under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, he said, China had made historic contributions to the conclusion, signing, entry into force and implementation of the Paris Agreement, and called for all countries to fulfill their commitments.

Xie emphasized that China would take action in formulating policy directed towards peaking carbon emissions by 2050 and achieving neutrality within another decade; transforming energy production to shift to green sources; and preserving forest carbon sinks with their natural diversity.

He said China would introduce a "1+N" policy system – '1' being the core guidance on carbon neutrality and 'N' the action plan to achieve it. It would promote green and low-carbon transformation of energy, strengthen forest carbon sinks and strengthen conservation of existing forest resources, in response to the "Global Planting of Trillion Trees" leader initiative backed by the World Economic Forum.

Xie and his colleagues also met with national ministers and business leaders from around the world to discuss collaboration and the circular economy among other topics.
